The mathematical shell model underlying general shell elements
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that although no actual mathematical shell model is explicitly used in ‘general shell element’ formulations, we can identify an implicit shell model underlying these nite element procedures. This ‘underlying model’ compares well with classical shell models since it displays the same asymptotic behaviours—when the thickness of the shell becomes very small—as, for example, the Naghdi model. Moreover, we substantiate the connection between general shell element procedures and this underlying model by mathematically proving a convergence result from the nite element solution to the solution of the model. 3 D - Shell Elements and Their Underlying Mathematical Model
We focus on a family of shell elements which are a direct generalization of the shell elements most commonly used in engineering practice. The elements in the family include the effects of the through-the-thickness normal stress and can be employed to couple directly with surrounding media on either surfaces of the shell. We establish the “underlying” mathematical model of the shell discretizat...
متن کاملA Continuum Shell-beam Finite Element Modeling of Buried Pipes with 90-degree Elbow Subjected to Earthquake Excitations
In the current work, the seismic analysis of bent region in buried pipes is performed, and effects of soil properties and modeling methods on pipe’s response are investigated. To do this task Beam, Beam-Shell Finite Element modeling and a Continuum shell FE models of a 90 degrees elbow are employed. In the Beam model, the pipe is simulated by beam elements while combined shell-beam elements a...
متن کاملInsight into finite element shell discretizations by use of the ‘ ‘ basic shell mathematical model ’ ’ Phill
The objective of this paper is to gain insight into finite element discretizations of shells using the basic shell mathematical model and, in particular, regarding the sources of ‘‘locking’’. We briefly review the ‘‘basic shell mathematical model’’ and present a formulation of shell finite elements based on this model. These shell finite elements are equivalent to the widely-used continuum mech...
متن کاملBack-calculation of mechanical parameters of shell and balls materials from discrete element method simulations
Discrete Element Method (DEM) is extensively used for mathematical modeling and simulating the behavior of discrete discs and discrete spheres in two and three dimensional space, respectively. Prediction of particles flow regime, power draw and kinetic energy for a laboratory or an industrial mill is possible by DEM simulation. In this article, a new approach was used to assess the main paramet...

This paper presents a simple methodology for cost estimation of a near optimal heat exchanger network, which comprises mixed materials of construction. Intraditional pinch technology and mathematical programming it is usually assumed that all heat exchangers in a network obey a single cost model. This implies that all heat exchangers in a network are of the same type and use the same mate...
